A water purifier is like your home’s “health guardian,” providing us with clean drinking water every day. However, many people only know how to use it but don’t know how to maintain it, which can shorten the purifier’s lifespan, reduce filtration effectiveness, and even lead to bacterial growth—all of which can compromise the safety of your drinking water. In reality, maintaining a water purifier is incredibly simple. By mastering a few simple tips, you can extend the machine’s lifespan and ensure consistent filtration performance—even beginners can do it with ease.
💡 Rinse Regularly to Prevent Impurity Buildup
After using a water purifier for a while, the surface of the filter cartridge will accumulate silt and impurities. If not rinsed promptly, this can clog the cartridge, affecting water flow and filtration performance, and shortening the cartridge’s lifespan. We recommend running the tap for 1–2 minutes before each daily use to flush away impurities from the filter surface. Perform a deep rinse once a week: for RO reverse osmosis systems, use the machine’s built-in rinse function to remove trapped impurities from the RO membrane; for ultrafiltration systems, simply disassemble the filter cartridge and rinse the surface with clean water—it’s quick and easy.
Additionally, if the water purifier is not used for an extended period (such as during a business trip or vacation lasting more than 3 days), flush the unit for 3–5 minutes upon returning home to drain any stagnant water and prevent bacterial growth. Only then should you resume normal use, ensuring your drinking water remains safe and reliable.
📅 Replace Filters on Time—Say No to “Overused” Filters
Filters are the heart of a water purifier and are consumables that must be replaced on schedule—this is key to maintaining your system. Different filter types have varying replacement cycles, as previously detailed; let’s reiterate them here: PP cotton every 3–6 months, activated carbon every 6–12 months, RO membranes every 1–2 years, and ultrafiltration membranes every 1–2 years.
Don’t let filters run past their expiration date just to save a few dollars. Expired filters not only significantly reduce filtration effectiveness but also breed bacteria, becoming a source of “secondary contamination.” The water you drink could end up being dirtier than tap water. You can set a reminder on your phone or label the filter with the replacement date to ensure you don’t forget.
🧹 Clean the unit and connections to prevent bacterial growth
The body and connections of water purifiers easily accumulate dust and water stains. Over time, this can lead to bacterial growth and affect the safety of your drinking water. We recommend wiping down the unit with a clean cloth once a week and cleaning any water stains or debris from the connections. Under-sink water purifiers are installed beneath the sink in a relatively humid environment, so you should regularly check the connections for leaks to prevent water buildup and bacterial growth. For countertop water purifiers, clean the water tank once a week by simply rinsing it with clean water. Do not use detergents to avoid leaving residues.
Additionally, the wastewater tank (if applicable) should also be cleaned regularly to prevent wastewater from sitting for extended periods, which can cause odors and bacterial growth. After cleaning, rinse it thoroughly with clean water before reuse.
⚠️ Pay attention to the usage environment to prevent damage to the unit
The environment where the water purifier is placed is also crucial. Keep it in a dry, well-ventilated, and cool location, away from direct sunlight, as direct sunlight can cause bacteria to grow inside the unit and accelerate filter cartridge deterioration. Do not place it in hot or humid areas, such as near stoves or water heaters, as high temperatures can damage the unit’s seals and filter cartridges. Also, do not disassemble the water purifier without proper knowledge to avoid damaging internal components and affecting normal operation.
In reality, maintaining a water purifier is not complicated at all. By simply performing regular flushing, replacing the filter cartridges on schedule, and cleaning the unit, you can extend its lifespan, ensure effective filtration, and provide your family with healthy, safe drinking water. For a small investment, you can safeguard your family’s drinking water health—it’s truly well worth it.
