Basic Types of Water Filter Cartridges
Water filter cartridges are primarily categorized by filtration precision as follows:
Microfiltration
With a filtration precision generally ranging from 0.1 to 50 microns, common types such as PP cotton filters, activated carbon filters, and ceramic filters all fall under the category of microfiltration. These are used for simple coarse filtration, capable of removing large particulate impurities like silt and rust from water, but they cannot eliminate harmful substances such as bacteria. These cartridges typically require frequent replacement.
PP Cotton Filter Cartridge: Made of ultra-fine polypropylene fibers with pore sizes ranging from 0.5 to 100 microns, it directly filters out impurities larger than the pore size. It is generally used as the first-stage filter in water purifiers, with a service life of 3–6 months.
Activated Carbon Filter: Removes discoloration and odors from water while improving its taste. Additionally, activated carbon adsorbs and removes residual chlorine, organic chemicals, and other contaminants from the water. Its service life is approximately 6–12 months.
Ultrafiltration
Abbreviated as UF, with a filtration precision ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 microns, it is one of the mainstream water filtration membranes currently available. Ultrafiltration effectively removes harmful substances from water, such as rust, silt, suspended solids, colloids, bacteria, and large-molecule organic compounds, while retaining minerals beneficial to the human body.
Ultrafiltration does not require electricity or additional pressure; it relies solely on tap water pressure for filtration. It offers high water recovery rates and low operating costs, making it well-suited for comprehensive purification of household drinking water. However, its drawback is that its filtration precision is not as high as that of RO (reverse osmosis), and it cannot filter out heavy metals from the water.
Nanofiltration
Abbreviated as NF, its filtration precision lies between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis, at approximately 0.001 microns. Nanofiltration can remove most harmful substances from water, including heavy metals, while retaining some minerals. Nanofiltration requires electricity and pressure, has a lower water recovery rate, and is relatively less common in household water purifiers.
Reverse Osmosis
Abbreviated as RO, it has a filtration precision of approximately 0.0001 microns, making it the most precise of the four filtration technologies. Reverse osmosis membranes effectively filter out nearly all impurities in water (including both harmful and beneficial ones), such as heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, and pesticides, allowing only water molecules to pass through.
Reverse osmosis technology requires pressure and electricity, generates wastewater, has a complex structure, and is relatively expensive. However, reverse osmosis water purifiers produce safe water that removes various harmful impurities, perform well during water supply emergencies, and provide water with a pleasant taste.

How to Choose the Right Water Purifier for Your Home
Choose Based on Water Quality
If your tap water quality is already good and you simply want to improve the taste, an ultrafiltration (UF) or activated carbon water purifier may be sufficient. If you live in an area with hard water or have higher water quality requirements, we recommend choosing a reverse osmosis (RO) water purifier. Selecting a reputable brand is also crucial.
Choose Based on Household Needs
For drinking water alone, any type will suffice; however, for comprehensive purification of household water, an ultrafiltration (UF) system is recommended due to its high flow rate and low operating costs.
RO systems produce water that is safe to drink directly, but they generate wastewater, require electricity, and involve relatively complex installation.
Ultrafiltration water purifiers generally do not require a pump or electricity, eliminating electrical safety concerns. They have relatively low failure and leakage rates, a simple design, and are affordable; however, it is best to boil the water before drinking.
Consider Installation and Maintenance Costs

Common Misconceptions About Water Purifiers
Misconception 1: Purified water lacks minerals and is unhealthy for long-term consumption
Although RO reverse osmosis water purifiers remove minerals from the water, we primarily obtain minerals through food. The mineral content in water is negligible and contributes very little to the body’s mineral intake.
Misconception 2: Imported brands are always better than domestic brands
In reality, water purification technologies and products from foreign brands may not necessarily be suitable for China’s water quality conditions. Chinese brands such as Qinyuan and Midea have developed products tailored to the specific characteristics of China’s water, which may be more suitable for domestic use.
Misconception 3: Filter cartridges do not need to be replaced on schedule
Filter cartridges must be replaced regularly according to the user manual. Failure to replace them in a timely manner will not only affect purification performance but may also lead to secondary contamination.
